Jackson I/O
Email

Email accounts at this domain are for my family and friends.  If you know me and would like to have an email address that is forwarded to another address, or to have a regular email accout (including webmail), I will be glad to accommodate you.  They cost me nothing extra so they costs you nothing.

There are two types of email addresses at the jackson.io domain: forwarders and pop accounts.

Forwarder Addresses

If you have a jackson.io forwarder address, there is no password and nothing to configure.  Email sent to your forwarder address will automatically be forwarded to your other email address.

Forwarders may not send outgoing email via this domain, but you should be able to specify the address as the 'From' address for email you send via your regular email provider.  For example, I send email via my Comcast account that indicates it is 'From:' a jackson.io address.

Forwarders cannot use webmail at this site because the email is not stored here.  But if you already use webmail at the destination address, you will see your jackson.io mail there also.

To stop forwarding, change the destination, or add a new address, send me the change.

Advantages of Forwarders

There are several reasons you might want a forwarder email address.  Consider some of these.

  • This can be the last time you ever alert everyone to change your email address.

You can get a forwarder that points to your present email address and start using it as your primary email address.  But then when you need to switch ISPs, you don't even need to tell anyone.  Just send me the new address, I'll update the email server and all email sent to your jackson.io address is automatically redirected to your address at the new ISP.

  • When you switch email addresses to a forwarder, you can let people update their address books as they get around to it.  Both old and new addresses come to the same mailbox and you continue accessing email to both old and new addresses the same as you do now.

  • Often you can't have the email address you want at a big email provider because it's already taken.  So (assuming your name is ziggy) instead of ziggy92038@verizon.net, you can have ziggy@jackson.io.

  • You can reduce the risk of using your email address in risky situations.  For example, if you want to post a comment on an online forum that displays your email address, hateful spambots may mine the site for email addresses and start sending you ignorant, time-wasting, crude spam.  But if you have a throw-away forwarder address, you can use it until you start getting spam and then delete it.

  • It's a cool domain name.  At least I think so.

For reference, here is a college and another that offer similar services to their alumni and give similar information.  Bigfoot offers a limited service like this for free or full service for a price.  NetForward offers this service for $10/year, though they have about 25 domains to choose from.

POP Accounts

POP accounts are regular email accounts.  That is, the email comes to this server and is stored here until you access it.

You can configure your PC software (often Outlook or Outlook Express) to retrieve your email, or you can view it as webmail in a browser, or both.  Here is the information needed to configure your PC.

Usernameuser@jackson.io  (use your email address)
Incoming Mail Server mail.jackson.io
Supported Protocols POP3, POP3S (SSL/TLS), IMAP, IMAPS (SSL/TLS)
Outgoing Mail Server mail.jackson.io  (authentication is required)
Supported Protocols SMTP, SMTPS (SSL/TLS)

Outlook and Outlook Express can be configured to retrieve email from more than one email address.  Basically, you click Tools -> Accounts -> Add   and enter your information including the information from this table.

The host of this site has configuration demos that play little flash movies of several popular Windows email clients being configured.

Also, googling for a way to do it turns up lots of information, including these:   Microsoftehow.com, and  Dave Taylor

The webhost also provides a knowledgebase for email configuration, although a lot of it is oriented toward helping the webmaster, not the user.

How to Access Webmail

Your browser must have cookies enabled.  Only POP accounts can be accessed via webmail.

Click on the link Webmail Login link here or in the navigation menu on any page.

Next you will see a pop-up window or page asking for your username and password.  Your username is your full email address, e.g.: user@jackson.io.  Enter your username and password.

Webmail Login Dialog

or

Webmail Login Dialog

or

Webmail Login Page

Next you will see a "cPanel Mail Management" window that allows you to choose two webmail applications.  You can experiment with them.  SquirrelMail allows you to configure everything imaginable from its Options page, though the defaults work well.

Note that you can also change your account password from the Mail Management window.

"Throwaway" Email Addresses

A forwarder email address can be setup, used and then disabled after the desired response is received.  This is handy if you have to give an address to some person, company or website that you don't trust to not spam you.  This is called a throwaway or disposable email address.

I can set those up and delete them manually, but it would be better to set them up via an automated site.  Here are some sites that allow you to setup disposable or throwaway email addresses.  You can find more by searching for disposable email.
